100 Day Challenge: Day 20. Purple crystal hair clip.

Hooray, I’m at day 20 of the 100 Day Challenge!  1/5 of the way there.  To recap, each day I’ll be making a new item, using only materials that I already have on hand.  I’ll do this each day for 100 days, no breaks.  The goal is to use items that I’ve had sitting around for a while, because I am a bit of a magpie.  It is also pushing my creativity, to come up with something different each day.

I seem to have accumulated a lot of crystal in my stash.  Most of it comes from a local bead shop, Rainbow Minerals, including the crystals I’ve been working with over the past few days.  Today’s project continues with Preciosa crystals, this time in a sparkly purple hair clip.  I’ve made a few hair accessories, and these alligator clips are easy to work with and easy to use.  I bought a big bag of them about a year ago, and am having a great time using them.  I’ve got a commission coming up to make some with just pearls, so stay tuned for those as well.  -Robyn

100 Day Challenge: Day 4

Today’s project departs from the earthy magnesite and steers right into bling territory.  I got these chandelier components from the same online shop as the magnesite beads.  The loops are spaced quite close together, making me feel like some fairly small beads would hang best.  I chose 4mm Preciosa crystals, picking a bright, spring-inspired green.  The colour choice was deliberate…

I recently applied to a great juried show, the MAC Fair: BLOOM, and found out I was accepted.  Woo hoo!  They’ll be holding a raffle and these will be my donation.  The show has a spring theme, and is the day before Mother’s Day, so a cheerful, verdant green seemed perfect for the occasion.  Check out the details in the link above or in the calendar to the right, and come check out what will be a great event!

Announcing Hair Accessories by Drakestail Jewellery!

Robyn and I have been toying with the idea of designing a line of hair accessories for the last year or so. We talk about it, discuss potential designs, materials and styles and then go back to our comfort zone of making jewellery.

Well this past September we finally bit the bullet! We were asked for a quote on hair accessories for a beautiful bride (Nicole) and her bridal party. Robyn and I hashed out options and a cost estimate and provided that to Nicole. She let us know a few days later that she liked our proposal best and off we were to make our first commissioned set of hair accessories! The most exciting part for us what that the option Nicole selected was designed with dyed leather, which is a material we’d never worked with before. Robyn and I set to work while I was in Ottawa on vacation, cutting the leather, dyeing the leather and assembling the pieces.

I delivered them to Nicole when I got back to Edmonton after my vacation and she has recently sent us some lovely pictures from her big day. Here are a couple to show you the finished product! We made the triangle shaped hair clips in off-white, marigold and blue as well as the  birdcage veil the bride is wearing.

Pearls and crystals

We’re both very excited about our upcoming vintage line. We can’t give anything away just yet, but we’ve placed a big order for our components and are eagerly awaiting their arrival.  I don’t know about you, but the time between clicking the “buy” button and when your goodies arrive at the door just seems to take AGES.

Pearls and Crystals
New hair accessories and a pair of earrings, all with sparkly pearls and crystals

As you may have seen on Twitter, I’ve been playing around with making hair accessories.  I recently bought some pearls and crystals in a wide variety of colours, and started playing with blinged-up hair elastics and clips.  How do you like to add colour to your hair?  Comment below, or visit our Facebook page to place your vote!
