Home at last

Well from September 26th to October 13th, I lived my life as a travelling jewellery maker. I left Edmonton early on a Thursday morning to head to Winnipeg and prepare the launch of our Vintage by Drakestail Jewellery line at The Foxy Shoppe. I met some fantastic new friends, we got a large list of custom orders and the new line was very well received. I had the opportunity to work with Dano Tanaka Illustrator on our catalogue pictures for the new line. Once again, he made our pieces look amazing! All in all I can’t complain one bit about that trip.

After that I made my way to Ottawa for 13 days of vacation. I enjoyed a wonderful family dinner for my Mom’s 60th birthday, visited our cabin by the lake, spent lots of time with friends, spent lots of time with Robyn talking about the future of our company and where we want to take things.

I also really enjoyed taking in the views. There is nothing quite like the Fall season in the Gatineau Hills around Ottawa. It’s breathtaking, and also inspirational to this jewellery designer. I expect lots of Fall colour inspired pieces in my future.

My Mom's backyard

I’ve been home now for almost 2 weeks and I have to say it’s still challenging to get back into a groove with work, volunteer projects and Drakestail. I always seem to have so much on the go. All in all, my trip inspired a lot of thoughts about my future, it nurtured the gypsy in my soul and although I had to fight my cat to reclaim my little work station, it’s great to be home again.

What a weekend for Drakestail Jewellery!

Last Saturday, September 28th, The Foxy Shoppe held a special event to promote their new Fall stock and to announce new products and services coming to the store. The Shoppe now features Whipped Cosmetics (locally homemade soaps and bath products), The Polished Pinup Parlour (manicure and lash extension services), Dano Tanaka Illustrator (pinup photography studio) as well as the new Vintage by Drakestail Jewellery! It was great to see so many great people bringing their passions together to collaborate on such a fun and exciting event.

The Foxy Shoppe was buzzing with energy and excitement last Saturday and the response to our new line was fantastic. I was even lucky enough to get a fancy picture in front of the familiar Foxy Shoppe pink wall, wearing a dress from the Shoppe, photographed by Dano Tanaka!

Our first design set for Vintage is available in 5 colours (white, black, light gold, lavender and rosaline – pictured below), made of 8 mm Swarovski pearls and high-quality silver-filled findings, with our signature stardust beads. Our first sets have been such a success that we’re already planning our next vintage-inspired pieces.

For now, Vintage by Drakestail Jewellery is exclusive to The Foxy Shoppe.  Contact them to order yours or stop by to see their fabulous shop.  They will be available in our Etsy store in late October, and we may soon have news about our next retail location. Stay tuned for more!

A peridot custom jewellery order

photoWe often are contacted with custom order requests and we enjoy the process immensely. Of course we love designing pieces just for fun but working with a client, interpreting their vision, and designing something special just for them, is a lot of fun too.

Most of the time, requests for custom orders are for special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, or a special birthday. Recently I was contacted to design a different kind of custom order and I wanted to share that story with you.

A little less than a year ago, my very good friend lost her mother to cancer. Only a short 8 weeks after her initial diagnosis, she passed. It all happened so quickly. Michelle has spent the last year dealing with the loss of her mom, feeling roller coasters of emotions I can only begin to understand and for some reason, through all that, she’s been a huge support to me, always there to listen and offer an ear when I’ve had a bad day. My bad days are nothing compared to what hers have been, but there she always is.

I’m always honoured when people choose me to design their custom jewellery. It’s a significant thing to be involved in something that is so sentimental to our clients but this was my first request from a close friend, and my only request for something of this nature. A commemorative necklace, for Michelle and her Baba (grand-mother), in honour of her mother.

Michelle and I (over emails, because she lives in Halifax) talked about design details, what stones to incorporate and sizing required. When the pieces were complete I shipped them out, one to Halifax for Michelle and one here locally in Edmonton for her Baba.

I cried when we discussed the design, I cried while I was making the necklaces and I cried when I put them in the mail. They’ve become quite precious to me, as I hope they are for Michelle and Mrs Kolada.

Thanks for indulging me by reading this blog post.

Vintage Inspired Pink Set
Vintage-inspired necklace, bracelet, and earrings in Rosaline Swarovski Pearls

Robyn and I are very happy to officially announce that, as of next week, our new vintage inspired line, Vintage by Drakestail Jewellery, will be available at The Foxy Shoppe in Winnipeg, Manitoba!

This is the first time our jewellery is available in a physical store and we couldn’t be happier. The Foxy Shoppe is an upscale pin-up/retro boutique and we feel our vintage inspired line will fit right in there.

The Foxy Shoppe has some exciting new Fall inventory coming at the end of September and is taking this opportunity to announce new partnerships with The Polished Pinup Parlour, Whipped Cosmetics, Dano Tanaka Illustrator as well as with us, Drakestail Jewellery!

So if you are in Winnipeg on September 28th or can get there, please come by and visit all these great local businesses. See the event poster below for details.

Giveaway time! Celebrating a Milestone

Drakestail Jewellery was established in 2007 as a couple of friends who had just discovered how much fun it was to make jewellery.  Over the past six years we’ve gone from making jewellery for ourselves and our friends to attending craft and art shows and filling our Etsy shop with our creations.  We’ve just hit a great milestone – 100 items in our Etsy store.

Of course, we think this is cause for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than to share our creativity with you!  We are giving away a $25 gift certificate to our Etsy store.  Sign up and spread the word!
