According to this article from CNN, the next generation of smartphone screens may be made of manufactured sapphire. Rating a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphires are second only in hardness to diamonds. Significantly tougher than the glass currently used, the major stumbling block seems to be price.
I don’t know about you, but I’d pay the extra $30 to make my phone’s screen nearly indestructible!
